Have you ever wondered how many poems can fit inside a daffodil? The jokes a sunflower can tell? Or the stories the traveling honey bee shares with his friends between shifts? Le Petit Livre de Fleurs (tr. The Little Book of Flowers) is a musical memoir by Nebal Maysaud for solo piano, written when he faced housing insecurity, unemployment, and medical issues. During this time, he would visit gardens and adore the simplistic beauty of the fauna. The book contains nine independent pieces for intermediate pianists each painting a picture zooming in on one aspect of an imagined garden. The work is interjected with English and French poetry, reflecting on the composer’s vulnerabilities in this period.
